Rottingdean Smugglers – Pirate Ship

The Hello Flamingo team were extremely proud to be asked to produce the show stopping centrepiece for the annual Rottingdean Smugglers Night event in Rottingdean East Sussex. Taking part in this charitable event was very important for the team, helping to fundraise for our local community.

Each year the Village lights up for a spectacular procession of bonfire societies. The pirate themed event has a huge attendance of local residents and those who travel from further afield to take in the sights.

The procession of ‘pirates’ carrying torches travels through the village down to the seafront to a giant bonfire and fireworks display. Our pirate ship followed the procession down to the seafront where it is then burnt on the bonfire as an effigy.

The timber ship, based on the Cutty Sark, was built in our workshop by the Hello Flamingo production team. Measuring a huge 3.5m, it was quite a feat. The frame was built from timber, with portholes for mini cannons and beautiful detailing from shortwood carvings. The masts stood at 5m tall with sails.

It was lovely to be involved in such an important part of the local community calendar.
